Northern Uganda Coordinator
Rebecca Awayo is a dedicated Library and Information Science (LIS) professional, educator, and records management specialist with over 12 years of experience in librarianship, information management, and community engagement. She holds a Master of Science in Information Science from Makerere University and a Bachelor of Library and Information Science from Uganda Christian University.
She currently serves as an academic staff member at Lira University within the Faculty of Computing and Information Sciences, where she contributes to teaching and research in Library and Information Science. Her academic and professional interests include public libraries, records and archives management, digital transformation, artificial intelligence in libraries, and community-centered information services.
Rebecca also serves as the Senior Records Officer at Lira City Council, where she oversees records management and archival functions. Prior to this role, she worked as a librarian at Lira Public Library for nearly a decade, playing a key role in promoting digital literacy, establishing ICT services, strengthening children’s library services, and empowering women through technology-based initiatives.
She is actively involved in professional leadership and advocacy as the Northern Uganda Regional Representative for the Uganda Library and Information Association (ULIA), where she supports the professional development of librarians and the modernization of library and information services across the region.
Beyond her professional responsibilities, Rebecca is passionate about mentorship and youth empowerment. She works with the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) as a mentor for students under the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program at Lira University.
Her upcoming research publications focus on the role of public and community libraries in digital skills development and the importance of community partnerships in enhancing library and information services in Uganda.
